Pioneering composer, improviser, accordionist, and electronic musician Pauline Oliveros has collaborated with every generation of modern musical revolutionaries, from John Cage to Sonic Youth. For this special concert, Pauline will be joined by Halifax’s Norman Adams (laptop/cello), Toronto’s John Adams (live electronics) and sound poet Ione. Their music together is rooted in Pauline’s musical philosophy of “Deep Listening,” yielding a deeply expressive musical aesthetic.
"Through Pauline Oliveros and Deep Listening I finally know what harmony is....It's about the pleasure of making music." -- John Cage, 1989
For her Guelph appearance, Pauline will be joined by stalwart Guelph improvisers Jesse Stewart (percussion) and Ellen Waterman (flutes).
Co-presented with the School of Fine Art and Music, University of Guelph.

Featuring highly trained chamber musicians at the cutting edge of contemporary music, the Blue Rider ensemble has been involved in exploring 'instrumental theatre' and the extensions of concert ritual since its inception. In this concert, they collaborate with composer Peter Hatch (Artistic Director of the Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound) in a programme involving a mix of composed and improvised work that stretches the theatrical possibilities of post-classical concert music in new and intriguing directions.

NUMUS is extremely pleased to have added this very special event to the Structured Improvisations/Improvising Structures festival. This world premiere collaboration will feature baritone saxophone virtuoso David Mott and percussionist Jesse Stewart in performance with legendary bassist and improviser William Parker. Village Voice describes William Parker as "the most brilliant free jazz bassist of all time." We couldn't agree more. Don't miss this special event!
