Schubert Now: The Journey Outward is a 21st century ecological take on Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die Winterreise (A Winter’s Journey).
Conceived for big sound and image, The Journey Outward is performed by the Schubertnow collective (Michael Donovan – Baritone, Paul Pulford – Cello, Jennifer King – Piano, Nicolas Donovan – Drums) and pre-recorded electronic instruments.
These re-writings by Michael Donovan are teamed with continuous and immersive projections by Lukas Pearse. This show presents Winterreise not as an inward, human-centric journey, but as an outward journey into the natural world. The wanderer’s journey is depicted as a rejection of the human “civilized” world in favor of relational experience with nature. The wanderer’s ultimate alienation from his fellow humans emerges as a direct result of his final separation from the natural world.
